Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty
Dove - the cosmetics and soap company, has started a new marketing campaign, aimed at getting women to like themselves for who they are. One aspect I find very intriguing is the fact that they are using "real" women in their ads. Real women, not models, not anorexic, botoxed freaks of the metabolic nature. They supposedly aren't air brushing or editing these photos. Will this work in our superficial, beauty obsessed society. Doubtful, I for one know I will still buy products I think will make me look better. But if getting the media to shift back to a more normal perception of beauty can be started with campaign like this - then I am all for it.
One of the most notable features of the campaign are the short films they are producing and sharing on their site. The two that I really like are the "Onslaught" video and the "Evolution" video.
Onslaught is a unique look at the sheer volume of ads and images that bombard us daily, showing us what "beauty" is supposed to be. Overall, I think this is really well done. If you can't see the copy I've posted below (you need flash) you can view it here.
Onslaught
The older film is "Evolution" which shows a woman going from average to glamorous with the help of make-up artists, hair dressers and of course, photo shop. Considering this is a well known practice in the media, it makes a huge statement. Sure, we would all look like the girls in magazines if we stopped eating and had a cadre of stylists and 4 hours to get ready each day. I found this one to just make a huge impression on me. Again, if you can't see the video below, you can view it here.
Evolution
I think that they did a wonderful job with both videos, great editing, music and of course, the message is fantastic.

You know I've already seen the Evolution one, so the Onslaught one is new for me. I think that was a very powerful video and it was done very well! I think that it correctly portrays the disturbingness of the beauty industry at present, and that's the only way to get people to really care about these matters.
Thanks for posting this!

Really? You thought that was the best comment? This isn't an ad to use Dove products, I couldn't give a rats ass what you like to use. I like the idea that they are trying to address the way women are portrayed and show how unrealistic expectations can be.

Good to see someone has noticed. I think it is a shame what is being done. But we face it every day.
